I created a new mail profile and tested again and it's working great now. I tried to create a calendar event and it still didn't work. Once I got it working in domain and forced a sync, it works great. The domain would have synced over with DirSync if it had been active and valid in the Domains list. We no longer need that so I removed the domain and added it back the normal way (putting TXT record in public DNS). I believe the people before that set this up were trying to get AD FS working. I looked in Domains and saw that was in there so I clicked on it and it gave me a message telling me to configure using powershell.
We are using DirSync and everyone has a domain in attributes so it should be transferring over with the sync. I looked at my user in O365 and noticed was not an alias in email addresses. Ok, after a bit of work, this is what I found:
